"The
causes, experiences and consequences of food insecurity in South Africa: a
systematic review of community level research"
We are exploring the reality of food insecurity in South Africa over the last 20 years, drawing on the large body of peer-reviewed as well as unpublished literature since 1994 that studies individual, household and community food insecurity. Research questions: 1. What does case study evidence tell us about how food insecurity is experienced in South Africa- including challenges to accessing food, food availability, and nutrition? 2. What are the implications of this evidence for decision makers and stakeholders at various scales - including policy makes - in South Africa? Inclusion/ Exclusion Criteria - case studies must: 1. Focus on aspects of the lived experience of food insecurity - and hunger- (whether this relate to access, utilisation, or availability of food) 2. Present primary empirical work at sub-national scale 3. Include clearly stated aims, objectives, and methods; and also attempt to verify how reliable the data is 4.
